What You’ll Learn:

Introduction to Ornamental Borders
The course begins with an introduction to ornamental borders, where you will learn about their purpose and the rich history behind decorative borders in art. We’ll explore various common styles such as Classical, Baroque, Rococo, Mughal, and Art Nouveau, giving you a broad understanding of the influences and aesthetics. Additionally, you’ll get familiar with the essential tools and materials needed to create these designs.

Design Foundations
Next, we focus on design foundations. This section covers the core principles of composition, including balance, repetition, and flow, which are crucial for creating harmonious borders. You will also learn about constructing basic shapes and symmetry, as well as how to effectively manage margins, spacing, and alignment to ensure your borders look polished and professional.

Scrolls and Flourishes
The scrolls and flourishes section introduces the art of scrollwork and spiral forms. You will learn how to combine these flowing shapes with botanical elements to craft borders that have rhythm and movement, enhancing the overall decorative appeal.

Creating Full Border Frames
Following this, the course covers how to create full border frames. You’ll design borders that fit different shapes such as rectangles, circles, and ovals. Special attention is given to corner transitions, creating seamless repeats, and using negative space effectively, including details on inner frame decoration.

Final Project and Finishing Touches
The course concludes with a final project where you’ll apply everything you’ve learned to create a complete ornamental border. You will receive guidance on inking, shading, and refining your linework to enhance depth and clarity. Finally, you will learn how to prepare your artwork for presentation, including scanning, digital cleanup, and how to apply your designs to printables or other mediums.
